Fire Grilling and the Mercy of Friends.

I've known Hans ever since the third grade. We were just a bunch of young little kids running around catching bugs, snakes, lizards, and running crazy- like thru the canyons behind our homes. We became really good friends that built a kinship around exploring in the outdoors. As we grew older our ventures grew bolder and we started to venture out beyond our neighborhoods into the desert and mountains. Those trips transformed from afternoon walks on the trails to multi-day overnight camping stays and with our camp food, you gotta eat when you're out there. Adventuring builds up an appetite. Now, brother Hans and I took two distinctly different approaches to eating. For some reason, I was a strong proponent of the minimalist approach. Not sure where that came from but yes it happened. Maybe it was just pure laziness, maybe it was a kind of fun snarkiness, I’m not sure. But when I would reach into my bag of food tricks and plot to cook a can of store-bought chile, everyone would stop and look at me like I was a poor kid that was raised by wolves. The laughter and humor would soon ensue. Hans and my other soulful wanderers took a different path, they enjoyed eating so he would bring real food like meat & vegetables. Meals that required a recipe and some knowledge of cooking. Over time my lifestyle started to show some cracks. The appeal of sitting quietly around a campfire glancing longingly at the wonderful food that my friends would make made would not sit with me well for long. It's one thing to eat food made in a factory alone but when you're sitting… there... tempted by the smells and odors of wonderful steak and fresh vegetables, plans have got to change. This was not working.

I think at some point I started to look like a stray dog on the porch looking inward at the family eating dinner and it must have been at that point my good friends took pity on me and decided to feed me a decent meal. I am not certain if the sad puppy dog face was intentional but it worked…… any landing is a good one. I was very grateful for the mercy of my friends and that changed the spirit of my trips over time. Good food has a way of doing that.

But I'm gonna come clean with everybody… gonna be honest… This is going to be hard to admit but I’m doing it anyway. Instead of getting my food and learning how to cook myself…. This mercy was shown to me just furthered the habit of mooching off my friends. I mean why learn to cook when you've got great friends who already know how to cook and …it seems….they liked to feed me anyways… right? Well, that went on for a while and like all good things… stuff has to come to an end. Impermanence, all things being in flux.

Impermanence, called anicca (Pāli) or anitya (Sanskrit) appears extensively in the Pali Canon as one of the essential doctrines of Buddhism. The doctrine asserts that all of conditioned existence, without exception, is "transient, evanescent, inconstant".

We all moved our separate ways and went on our own adventures. With that change, For me, the problem was, my camp chefs went away. No more chuck wagon for this hombre. I was back to step one, I was back to eating my own food and that’s not good. It's one thing to live with something you have taken for granted and it's another when you know what you had and now it's gone. Well, there is a happy sunset at the end of this story.

Good old’ Hans has reached out again, over time and space, to help his friends and created a cooking kit that makes wonderful food over the campfire….. real easy like.
